Loving & Training a Foster Dog

Many people ask my husband and I how we can "take animals into our homes, care for them, love them, and then give them up?" The answer is simple… they need our help! Yes…we do find ourselves becoming emotionally attached… but we know that we are simply there to help. And there is nothing more rewarding than placing a beloved foster pet into a new and loving home.

The Mess at the Beginning

Adjusting with the dog when they first enter our home can sometimes be difficult based on their experiences and trust in humans. Sometimes it takes weeks for them to trust us. They are shy and vulnerable in new environments. But their heart will warm up to you eventually and they will trust you.

Then you have to worry about training. Dog training can be difficult but the key is repetition. The house will be messy and maybe smelly but the carpet and next owners will thank you.

Tip:

When training dogs (or cats) be open to different methods. Every pet is different and what works for one won't necessarily work for the other.

How to do it:

  1. Have patience & keep your head.

  2. Show love and grace when they keep messing up, but have a stern "No."

  3. Once the pet has learned the skill, take away the tell (ex. the bell on the door knob).

  4. Remove the treats when they can get the skill without the tell.

  5. Know your pet - some training methods go sideways. Some dogs learn that if they go outside they will get a treat and will want to go frequently.
