They're Just That: Hobbies

Ever heard the saying "too much of anything is a bad thing"?

Well it's true.

TikTok has a special design that was unlike anything before on social media: the "for you page" (fyp) - which funnels everything going out on the app into one channel. It then curates content for you by keeping "track of what you watch, how long you watch it for, what you interact with, and your general interests." This is what makes your fyp unique to you.

While this has revolutionized social media, it can still be dangerous for users.

This algorithm in particular acts like a rabbit hole, once you jump in it's hard to get back out. It becomes addicting. Especially when all of the content is stuff tailored to you, it can be easy to get lost.

The same thing applies to all aspects of life - they're aspects not your life. Hobbies are just that - hobbies. Whatever you have fun with or commit time to, remember that it's not your whole world. It's okay to mess up - it won't ruin your life. Just pick yourself up and keep going.

"Hobbies are great distractions from the worries and troubles that plague the living" - Bill Malone

Hobbies are meant to be small enjoyments in life or distractions but they should never overrun your life. They should especially never get in the way of getting what you need to get done, done. So, when you are working on your hobbies or scrolling through TikTok and you hear that little voice in your head remind you that you have a deadline for something coming up, pause what you're doing - you can always come back to it later. Treat it like a reward.

Don't forget to reward yourself. You deserve it!

I would say It all depends on the time you have. If 5 hours is taking time away from a job or an assignment, well it is too much time. Time management is the key when it comes to hobbies and rewarding our time with fun.

I'm seeing TikTok becoming more than a hobby for a lot of people.

That has been a recent upward trend.

If I play video games for 5 hours a day, is that too long of a reward?

I agree with @Christian Castro here. It depends on your own time and schedule. These things also vary from day to day sometimes. It would be a perfect way to spend the weekend, but if it is (what I call) a "mind break" then it may be too much time spent as a reward.
